Introduction

Dr. Messan Mawugbe is the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute of Brands Narrative Analysis (IBNA), a civic‑tech oriented media intelligence and narrative monitoring hub based in Accra, Ghana. With over 20 years of leadership experience spanning media regulation, academia, international development, and strategic communications, he is widely regarded as a pioneer in media monitoring, narrative intelligence, and public discourse analysis in Ghana and across the region.

Professional Profile

Dr. Mawugbe is a respected authority in media monitoring, strategic communications, and narrative intelligence, with a career that bridges research, policy, diplomacy, and corporate advisory. He previously served as Director of Research and Media Monitoring at Ghana’s National Media Commission (NMC), where he led national audits on media narratives, public trust, and discourse ethics.

In 2005, he founded the Centre for Media Analysis (CMA), an institution recognized for promoting media ethics and professional standards. CMA later evolved into IBNA, expanding its mandate into advanced narrative intelligence, reputation analysis, and civic‑tech driven media insight.

Dr. Mawugbe has led and delivered high-impact media intelligence and monitoring initiatives for national institutions, diplomatic missions, international organisations, and leading corporate brands. Notable engagements include:

  • Lead Media Monitoring Consultant for UNICEF Ghana, following a successful national competitive bid, serving on a two-year contract

  • Establishment of the Media Monitoring Unit of the Ghana Police Service, including training of the Public Affairs Directorate in media coding, tracking, and analysis

  • Leadership of a national media monitoring study for the Canadian High Commission, with findings presented at the High Commissioner’s residence

  • Media monitoring and governance support for CARE International, STAR Ghana, and national electoral media monitoring programmes

  • Provision of ongoing brand and reputation intelligence services to leading financial institutions, including GCB Bank, ADB Bank, and First Bank

Academic & Capacity-Building Leadership

Alongside his consulting work, Dr. Mawugbe has made significant contributions to academic leadership and professional development. He is a former university lecturer and department head at Central University and the University of Professional Studies, Accra, where he trained and mentored hundreds of students and communication professionals.

Through IBNA, he continues this commitment by creating employment pathways for young people and equipping them with high-value skills in digital media monitoring, narrative listening, and data-driven insight generation.
